i’ve started a new project this year — painting!
even though i went to art school and stuff, i find painting SUPER intimidating. idk if it’s that i get scared it will look like a ‘child’ made it, reminds me of art history, or the fact that i’m using like $4 paints, but it really really scares me. and for one of the first times in my business, i was afraid to be vulnerable showing my work.

the practice of painting has been in a word - therapeutic. i’m able to turn my brain off and really feel my way through being creative. that can be difficult when designing greeting cards, because i gotta think about ‘hmm what customer is this serving?’ or ‘what’s another word for happy?’.

it’s been such a beautiful experience to get back to my fine art roots, while seeing how the work is informing my digital design of cards and prints. and also just keeping things simple and dreaming up landscapes, shapes, and colors that make me happy.

the original painting!

i have called the project ‘painting practice’ and tagged all photos on ig with #abpaintingpractice, because that’s what it is all about! this is a completely new medium for me, and i’m sure my forms and shapes will evolve, but i’m so grateful and proud of what’s been flowing out right now and living in my painting present.

and just in case you’re interested,
you can purchase your own original painting practice piece here! (:

i’m excited to share that i have fallen in love. with my sketchbook.

i have never been a big sketchbook person. of course i was required to have one in school, but it honestly just felt like homework rather than a tool to build up my creative muscles. most of the time when creating, i get started drawing right away on my ipad and apple pencil, usually starting on what ends up being the final outcome. i just hate drafting!!!! maybe it’s my impatience, but i love a finished product (:

but things have changed! WHAT!

my beautiful friend and fellow small biz owner, pei, and i decided to challenge each other to drawing daily ON PAPER. we both would check in periodically to keep each other accountable. if one of us missed a day, we would just encourage to keep up and catch up with pages where you could.

the experience made me realize how healing and therapeutic a sketchbook can be. it feels so personal, yet also so open??? it felt like a practice i was excited to start each day or try to bring into small pockets of time i had available.

i’m back at the blog for my SECOND ENTRY. omg guys i did it. i made at least a second entry. i’m shocked. this time i’m super excited for the return of #alliesenvelopes !!!!

i’ve always loved TV and movies, mostly TV. anyone who knows me, probably knows this to be a fact lolol.
not to sound like a gigantic loser, but TV has just always been a great escape for me when i’ve been feeling down, or need to just turn my brain off.
after a breakup, i would watch friends because i knew i would be able to start laughing again.
when i’m super stressed out or scared for my future, i’ll watch the sopranos because whatever is bothering me is not nearly as bad as some of the shit that tony has to handle.

i started #alliesenvelopes in 2017 i think? combining my love of addressing envelopes and my obsession with TV, it felt like a match made in heaven. it didn’t last long, only 5 posts.. probably because i was tired AF and got distracted.

i started thinking about #alliesenvelopes only 6 days ago and decided they needed to make a comeback. my friend paris (an amazing illustrator!!) and i were chatting about how when you create work for a living, people might have this lovely idea that you just get to chill at a desk and draw for fun. when ironically, most of the time you’re stressfully drawing for a project trying to get it perfectly right so you can get that money, honey. it can be easy to just see drawing as work and not something enjoyable..

this little project is to honor drawing for fun, not necessarily for profit.

i started sharing the return on stories, asking for suggestions of your favorite characters on TV and movies, and omg y’all are so good. I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM. you can follow the lil project along on instagrammm, @allie.biddle ! (:

do you have a character in mind????? let me know!

4 things that inspire me right now

welcome friends! i’ve been thinking about having a blog for a long time.. but figured i would stop after 2 posts and then forget about it. still don’t know if that will happen. or anyone will be reading, but this little corner will just be mostly things that make me happy, inspire my studio practice, and a collection of photos.

1. THIS COLOR PALETTE.
i usually hate trends as a designer. when i find myself really loving a trend, i wonder how genuine that love is or if it’s just a fleeting infatuation that results in a product i won’t love in a year. but, rainbows are on the uptrend right now + i’ve seen SO MANY rainbow designs in the stationery world that are so beautiful and clever. i have yet to create something specifically rainbow, but i’m definitely inspired by bolder colors, prism hues, and the JOY THEY BRING.

2. MAKING NEW PRODUCTS.
i’m so goddamn grateful for this job. there is nothing more rewarding than creating something, having someone love it too, and you’re able to make a living. my studio is basically my brain on paper, and i don’t know how i would express myself without this outlet. making new work brings me such joy! i’m super excited to hopefully be releasing tea towels in late spring (:

3. MY QUEST FOR FINANCIAL FREEDOM.
like many friends and people in our country, i’m in debt and that debt fatigue is real as fuck. let’s just put it out there for accountability, i’m about 15K in student loan + cc debt, both with sizable interest rates. that’s relatively low compared to many people, and i’m SO GRATEFUL that it’s as low as it is. but it still keeps me up at night, embarrasses me, makes me feel helpless. but i made a promise to myself to be debt free by the time i’m 30 and even if i don’t meet that goal, i’m gonna get damn close. i have a plan that i’m putting into action this year, and i plan to do a future blog post on it, once i see some results lololol. (: in the meantime, this podcast featuring the beautiful roe from @brownkids is AMAZING. she paid off $11,000 in debt in ONE YEAR!!!!!!
*i want to add that i wanna share this quest so i feel less alone and more accountable. promise this is not a pity entry to ask you to purchase something, but i will say that when you shop small with any small-batch maker, you are not only getting a high quality item, but you are also helping your dollar go further and help that maker provide for their family and future. and that’s a really beautiful thing! (: *

4. YOGA.
i started a yoga practice about 2 years ago i think? i credit my friend + first teacher nancy nelson for showing me the true joy it can bring. my practice has been on and off the past year with my move to tennessee, but it’s given me such everyday gratitude to be alive. all you gotta do is breathe and you’re enough (:
